- Joinery: hand-cut dovetails are usually irregular; machine-cut ones are perfectly even.
- Wear: real age shows where hands and feet touch — drawer fronts, chair rungs — not evenly everywhere.
- Hardware: old screws are often slightly off-center with uneven slots.
- Labels and paperwork: a new piece should be described honestly as new.
